Immerse yourself in one of the world’s largest pristine rainforests. Supported by local Amerindian guides, you will have the chance to see all the rainforest has to offer. On this expedition you will feel truly remote; so much so that you may even be the first humans some of the wildlife has ever seen. Spectacular wildlife, beautiful jungle camps, swimming in crystal clear rivers; this expedition is our most exciting yet.
At the base of the Kanaku Mountains, our jungle camp overlooks stunning river rapids. You’ll be well looked after by our local Katoka guides who are the custodians of this remote section of rainforest.

Day 01
Arrive in Georgetown. You’ll be staying in one of the city’s best hotels where you’ll meet the rest of your expedition team.

Day 02
Today we’ll head to the airport to get a chartered flight into the interior. You’ll get a chance to see just how vast Guyana's jungles are. We will land in Yupakari village and get introduced to some of our local guides. You’ll be staying in a wonderful traditional lodge, fully catered and the perfect place to relax before the adventure really begins.

Day 03
Leaving roads behind, we’ll travel deep into the rainforest by boat, exploring meandering jungle rivers on our way to our off-grid jungle camp. You’ll have the chance to see black cayman, giant river otters and a plethora of bird life. We’ll arrive late afternoon, set up camp, and relax in the nearby river.

Day 4
You’ve spent your first night in the jungle, we have our very own cook so no need to worry about food. You’ll be up early to head out on our famous wildlife boat drifts, we spend a few hours in the morning and evening silently drifting downriver, this is how we get so close to everything the jungle has to offer. We have no strict schedule so it’s totally up to you, whether you want to trek into the mountains, herp in the tree tops, swim in the rivers, drift for wildlife, or just open a cold beer and enjoy the sounds of the forest.

Day 5 - 6
You're a jungle pro now, but there’s still so much to explore, the Katoka are passionate guides and a fountain of knowledge. You will have been on many drifts now, turned over rocks to find tarantulas, drifted at night for snakes and the super rare oilbird, search for giant river otters, tapir, and jaguars, swam with electric eels and even fish for your own dinner.

Day 7 - 9
No trip to the jungle is quite complete without a harpy sighting. You’ll get the chance to visit its immense Kapock tree nest standing at 200ft tall. If you are lucky you might even see the world’s largest eagle land in its car-sized nest. Trek to one of the highest peaks in the region near the base of the Kanako mountains to finish our incredible stay in the rainforest.

Day 10
It’s time to head home, we will jump in the boats and head back to Yupakuri, we will over night there before getting our flight back to Georgetown, where you’ll say goodbye to all your new friends and head home.

Wildlife
You’ll see a whole host of jungle wildlife here. Everyday our eco-guides will show you everything the jungle has to offer, either by boat or hikes into the jungle. Our expert guides will identify wildlife from harpy eagles to mammals and the smallest insects as we explore.

Accommodation
In Yupakuri you’ll be staying in our luxury savanna lodge, made with traditional processes, you’ll get a taste of what Katoka and Macushis have to offer. You’ll have your own room and be well looked after while you stay and explore the amazing savannah.
Our jungle camp is a bit more basic, but that’s what you came here for. Its nestled in a stunning mora mora forest overlooking a beautiful waterfall. We have our own cook, a basic fridge, generator, toilet, and even a jungle shower. You’ll be sleeping in a traditional hut in hammocks under mosquito nets. -

Food
You’ll have your very own cook so if you have preferences or needs we can cater for that. Our cooks are extremely well trained and cook delicious food every day, whether it’s caught from the river or foraged. Expect delicious fresh BBQ fish, stews of beef and chicken, local veggies, juice, beer, and rum.

Solo-travellers
Many of our guests travel with us solo and often find they meet wonderful like-minded people on our expeditions.
If you’re travelling solo, please take note of the accommodation info. We are often unable to offer single-person supplements on our trips due to the in-camp set-ups we operate. We will always try and accommodate same-sex sharing wherever possible if individual sleeping arrangements aren’t feasible. If you have any concerns feel free to talk to us!

Transport
You’ll be on a mixture of plane, 4x4, boat and on foot, most days we will travel by boat but every now and then we will head out into the jungle on foot.

Our camp sites have running water with private showers. You are also welcome to bathe in our river rapid plunge pool or explore further afield with our guides.

We want everyone to enjoy our expeditions no matter who you are and how you identify yourself.
There are a number of up-to-date resources on LGBTQ+ rights and lived experiences in Kyrgyzstan for information. We don’t want anyone feeling like their enjoyment will be affected by how they identify. We’d be happy to have a discussion if you have any concerns, just get in touch.

Fitness
You don’t need to be a tough mudder to enjoy our expeditions. We do ask that you are happy to walk short distances in the humid temperatures and be able to carry a small bag with a few essentials. Because we will mostly be on boats you won’t be trekking far, although we do offer an optional jungle mountain trek with varying levels of difficulty, we can cater to most needs, if you want a real test we can offer that if you just want to relax and watch wildlife then that’s totally fine. We have people of all ages, 10 years old right the way up to 80. If you have more specific needs just give us a shout.

Ash
In 1999, Ash started to conduct river and camping expeditions into remote areas for people with a desire to get out into the wild. Over the years he has worked with and learned from the local Indigenous peoples and international researchers, and led over 100 trips for film crews, professional photographers, researchers, as well as birders, fishermen, and travelers with a keen interest in wildlife and nature.

20% deposit required to secure booking. Full payment required no less than 60 days before departure.
The price excludes flights, travel insurance, personal expenses, tips for staff and any costs outside the expedition dates.

Collaborating with the Katoka people
We work specifically with the Katoka people in one of their reserves, some 200 sq miles of untouched jungle that they take care of. In working with the Katoka we bring in vital work and skills, helping to build eco-tourism in this critical rainforest reserve.
Frequently Asked Questions

For our Guyana expeditions, you’ll be able to check into your hotel by around 2pm on the first day of the expedition. We’ll aim to have dinner as a team that evening and go over kit and safety briefs.
You can depart anytime after 11pm on the last day of the expedition. However, a single night in a hotel is provided for you in Georgetown, so most people will fly the following morning in case of delays.

You will be provided with all accommodation, food and transport from dinner on the first day of the expedition, until dinner on day 10. Airport transfers from Georgetown Airport to your hotel are included.
Exclusions: visa costs, flights, tips for local staff, any costs outside the expedition dates.

Guyana offers free visas on arrival for most passports. However, you must check the requirements yourself before departure. If you require a visa before arrival, we can recommend an agent to process this for you.
Please ensure you also check vaccination and COVID-19 information carefully before departure as these can be subject to change.

You are required to have travel insurance covering you for the duration of the expedition and for all the activities you will be undertaking. This includes trekking.
You will be asked to provide your insurance information closer to departure.
We strongly recommend that you take out cancellation and curtailment insurance (including Covid-19 cancellation) as part of your cover as soon as you have booked one of our expeditions to protect against cancellations.

Our expeditions are remote so we need to make sure the trip is appropriate for you.
Upon booking, you will receive a medical form from us which needs to be completed fully and honestly. We review all medical forms thoroughly. Please ensure you're completely honest when completing the form. It doesn't necessarily follow that you cannot join us if you have a medical issue, but it may mean adapting elements of the expedition, or ensuring we have appropriate medical supplies on site.

You don’t need to be super fit to join our expeditions!
You will need to be comfortable in transport for long periods of time as our locations are very remote - this includes river boats.
Due to the expedition’s remoteness, you will need to be free of any medical concerns that require regular medical attention.

Tips for local staff are completely at your discretion. All our staff are paid fairly for their work. Tips are welcomed in either Guyanese dollar or USD.
Giving tips at the end of your trip is a wonderful way of showing your gratitude for their hard work. If you plan to give tips, we can provide guidance on this, just get in touch.

You will be offline for the majority of the expedition. You will have wifi in your hotel in Georgetown, but it may be slow. You can buy a sim card and data in the airport. This will provide some connection on the way into the jungle, but when there you will not be able to get signal.
We will hold a sat phone for the duration of the expedition. This is strictly for emergency use only.
